NEW PLYMOUTH v. HAWEEA.

A match is being played to-day between New Plymouth and Hawera on the Hawera ground. The New Plymouth team in their first innings made 51, of which E. H. Davis made 24, none of the others reaching double figures. Hawera, at the time of going to press, has lost four wickets for 92, of which Burke has made 42, not out ; A. Bayly, 39.

Falconet has been scratched for all events at Egmont meeting.

Tbe proprietors of the Wellington Tramways, Dr. Grace, M.L.G., and Mr. Eobert Greenfield, are likely to experience very keen competition from Cotterill and Young, a substantial firm of carriers in the city. The 'busses purchased by the latter firm from Paterson and Co., of Auckland, have commenced running in opposition to the tramways and are favourably patronised. The conveyances will ran in all directions, and as the fare is only 3d day or night, whereas the Tramway Company charge 3d in the day and 6d at night, it is expected that the company's receipts will be seriously affected by the establishment of the 'bus service. As a counter move the company have despatched their manager to the south to make an extensive purchase of horses and 'busses, and in a week or two they expect to establish an opposition line of 'busses. Both Cotterill and Young and the Tramway Company are provided with capital, and it is expected the competition will be long and keen.
