" Vigilant " thus writes of Algerian, by Goldsborough —Algeria, who is at present such a hot favorite for the Melbourne Cup : — " Algerian (6st 7ib) is a powerful bay, and takes about the biggest girth of any horse I ever saw. Indeed, I believe they have to pet a girth specially made for him. If he's ' let,' I certainly can see nothing with a ten to one chance of beating Algerian. BarriDg an accident or a 1 blocking ' he certainly looks good goods. Accidents, we know, will happen, but I scarcely think his party are much afraid of Algerian being blocked. To start with, I don't know what is likely to get near enough the big horse with the little weight to block him ; and secondly, if any bumping tactics were adopted, lam thinking that this nag, who has a good deal of the sire and substance of a cart horse about him, would have all the best of the battle. So much for Algeriau, who, all going well, will start at the shortest price on record lor the Melbourne Cup." Guy Fawkes and Omata, the wellknown steepleohaaers, were recently offered for Bale by auction in Auckland, but both were passed in, the former at 45 guineas and the latter at 35 guineas. Gmata has been 6ent to Taranaki for a spell.
