NEWS AND NOTES.

Mr. McGuire addressed tbe electors at l^onnanby last evening. A report will appear to-morrow.

It is reported fr«m lowa that prohibition lias largely decreased crime in the State. The Sac Sun advertises the gaol of that county for rent, saying that it is empty and likely to remain 60 as long a 6 prohibition lasts.

It has rained in Haweva seven days out out of the ten of this month that have expired, though the fall has not been very heavy. During July 6'lo inches fell, rain having beeu recoided on 18 days out ot the 31. In July 188G, the rainfall in Hawera only registered I*o6 inch.
