1 A LIFE LOST IN THE RUINS. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.") BLENHEIM, June 30. When the fire was discovered, water and hand grenades were used, and the i brigade were quickly to work, but the ! flames, fanned by the breeze, got beyond ! control, till McAlister's office was pulled down, which saved the National Bank i and prevented the fire spreading up High- . street. The Fire Brigade station was I twice on fire. The insurances, so far as f is kuown, are: South British, £1350; [ Standard, .£3305 ; Liverpool and Globe, I £2950; Royal, £1000; Norwich Union, . £1300; Victoria, £857; National, £900; , Northern, £800; New Zpaland, £4200; i Equitable, £1350 ; Phoenix, £5425 ; Union > risks not attainable. July 1. f It is feared tbat Dr. Home, one of the , oldest settlers in the district, has perished > in the fire, in the Criterion Hotel, as he j is known to have slept, there, and nothing 3 can be heard of him to-day. At first it was thought he had gone to his farm, some miles from town, but that is not the | case. The ruins are being searched, but . oo body has yet been found. Dr. Home , was called when the fire broke out, and is reported to have got up. All hope of his beiDg found alive is lost. s Later. It is now considered certain that Home , perished in the fire. The smouldering t ruins of the Criterion Hotel are being . searched for the remains. The Union Insurance risks amount to £1850 ; United, [ &1250; Liverpool and Globe, £3500. T The estimated loss over insxirances sustained are— Augustus, £1200 ; Mullen, £1500 ; Tucker, £1200 ; Williams, £500 ; j Oddfellows, £500; Girling aud Co.
