LONDON, April 20. At to- day's sitting of the Conference the question of telegraphic communication between the various parts of the Empire was under consideration. The subject was discussed on the basis of the utility ot such communication to the Empire rather than with regard to the possibility of any eoicmercial return therefrom; Mr. Sandford Fleming (Canada) read a paper in support of the advantages from a defensive point of view of a cable between Canada and Avstralia. tariff of five shillings per word, between Europe and tbe colonies. The Conference ultimately expressed an opinion that it ib extremely expedient that additional caWes fibould \>e provided, huh the route and means of acquiring such cables are subject to consideration. The Conference to-morrow discusses ' the question of the Australian land defences. SYDNEY, April 21. In the Legislative Assembly last night, tbe debate commenced on My. Copeland's motion of want of confidence in the Government in connection with their financial proposals. Burns, the Treasurer, in replying to Copelaud, said he would stand by his proposed re-adjustment of , taxation, and by a sound system of retrenchment he would be able to reduce public expenditure. The prospect of a ' property tax being imposed was vanishing ' ■ day by day, and, if it were necessary, the J Government would be found to have the courage of their opinions.
