STRATFORD TOWN BOARD.

(FROM A CORRESPONDENT.)

The Town Board met last Wednesday evening, when the question of the inland road was discussed, and it was resolved to write to Major Atkinson on the subject, as well as on other matters which were referred to when he last addressed the people here. The board is anxious to open up tbe En.6t road in order to induce further settlement, and to secure eventually a road to meet the main trunk line. It was pointed out that an effort was being made to get a road in from Patea, but that such a road, according to surveyors, must pass through a considerable amount of broken country before the desirable country was reached ; whereas from Stratford a good pack track, which was used by the storekeepers, already existed for some twenty miles ; and that the cost of opening up the large blocks of inland Crown lands must be greatly in favor of doing so via the East road. It is said that Mr. Stout promised Messrs. Smith and Malone to send a surveyor from Stratford, and no doubt Major Atkinson will see that this is done.

Other business was that tenders be called for building the town ball and offices. The body of the hall will be exactly the same as the last, but there will be a gain in space in having no platform. Instead, there will be a stage two or three feet higher than the floor, and extending some 14 feet back, and a room at each side projecting beyond the building in a T shape, one of which will be the board's office.

Only one application was received for lease of the "southern portion of the recreation reserve— that of Perm Bros., which was accepted. Ten acres of tbe burnt part is to be felled and grassed. Term, Beven years. A list of defaulting ratepayers was read, and it was resolved to summons all who had not paid before the expiration of a fortnight. This is rendered necessary in order to secure as much as possible of the subsidy. Tenders are to be at once called for fencing in quarter-acre of the cemetery reserve, already cleared. The appointment of a registrar, and tbe native reserves were other matters about which the board decided to write to the Major.
