PROPERTY TAX,

Our Manaia correspondent writes : — As I understand there are a great many deferred payment selectors in this district who have only shown in their statements to the commissioner the net holding value of their land, and as assessois in no case have to inquire into mortgagees' or similar interests, it becomes necessary that each person in making hi s return should under the exemptions " Debts owing by me," take credit for the balance due to Government, of course returning the land at its freehold value in the proper place. In respect to statements in which this has not been attended to the effect will be that the property tax, where payable, will be calculated on the full freehold value of the land, whilst the person paying, not having claimed exemption, gets none. The proper way, although it is past the time for sending in statements, is to send at once an amended statement showing the debt on the land.
