The Star. MONDAY, JUNE 26, 1882. DEFERRED PAYMENT MONEYS.
T«k Waimatc Koad Board is iv a difficulty. The Commissioner of Crown Lands having passed schedules for new works amounting to £2500 the board considered they were entitled to lot contracts for works to that amount. The Treasury, however, having paid about £1000, declines to forward £700 still standing to the credit of the board on Juue 4th. The Crown Lauds Office, however, on Juue 12th, writes there are no funds to the credit of the board, thiib contradicting Hit; Trea&ury
assurance of April 4th and June 4th, at which dates they forwarded schedules showing the amount to the ci-edit of each block, and the section from which the money was derived. We understand that when the difficulty is arranged it will probably be found that either the Treasury or the Crown Lands Department in Wellington have been keepiug accounts against each particular block, not contemplating the likelihood of several blocks contributing to the cost of one road, as is being done on the Waiuiate. The money must be there or the Treasury could never send detailed accounts of the amount at the credit of the board, showing the source from which each separate sum was derived. The Land Act provides that deferred payment monies shall bo spent on roads " within or to open up the block," thus enabling several blocks to contribute to any one road of general importance.
