WELLINGTON, Last Night.
On the arrival of the steamer Stormbird, from Wanganui, this morning, three detectives proceeded on board, for the purpose of searching for a box of silver which had been stolen from the mate's room on Sunday last. The search waß a most careful one, but no indication of the stolen property could be found.
The Auckland City Council have decided that the Government should bo re-
quested to consider the advisability of introducing this session a measure to deal rvihh Yicensing an2k periodical examination of all dairies, utensils, &g. ; that the inspection of public dairies should be compulsory ; and that authority should be given under the Public Health Act to inspect the milk brought iuto the city, and also all milk carts ; and that for that purpose inspectors should be empowered to purchase for analysis a sample of any milk brought into the oity, and that a penalty should be imposed on any seller of milk who refuses to sell such a sample.

The City Council, having rocoivod no tenders for tho tramways, resolved to communicate with likely contractors.
On the 24th July, on the way to Sydney, a stowaway, on hoard the steamer Arawata, namo unknown, disappeared mysteriously. None of tho passongors knew him. He is bolieved to have fallen overboard.
PALMEBSTON N., Last Night.
Dykes, the bailiff of the Eesident Magistrate's and District Courts, was arrested yesterday morning as a dangerous lunatic. Some months ago he had a dangerous illness, and was an inmate of the Wellington Hospital for some time. He ap-
parently recovered, but his intellect soon showed signs of weakness. During the last week he became worse, and on Sunday night he struggled hard to put his wife into a scalding bath, under the impression that she was mad. He was examined by two doctors last evening, and ordered to the Wellington Lunatic Asylum. His wife and four children are totally unprovided for.
