£l4 a Week
SYDNEY HOSPITAL BEDS
It now takes £l4 to maintain a hospital bed for a week, says a Sydney paper. , .
In Royal North Shore Hospital, one of Sydney's biggest institutions, the average daily cost per bed for last month was £2 Os 6d a day. That was 2s a day more than the daily rate of upkeep in the previous month and, according to one of its directors, will again be exceeded next month.
Reasons- are the 40-hour week, higher wages for staff, and increased costs of foodstuff and all other services.
While these keep on piling up public hospitals are getting further and further into debt.
In spite of growing lottery profits, Governmental grants are not big enough to allow them to pay their way.
