Arrears of Rates
COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
The rates appeal committee reported to the Lower Hutt City Council on Monday night that it had considered ten cases involving arrears of rates. In three cases where sale proceedings had been commenced the ratepayers concerned have made arrangements for regular payments. Action on these lines has, therefore, been postponed, but sale proceedings will be brought on again in the event of further default. Consideration of one case was deferred to a full meeting of the committee. In a further case the ratepayer lias not answered numerous letters regarding arrears of rates, and it was decided that the matter be placed in the hands of the City Solicitor to take out a judgment summons. In one case where the position of the arrears account has shown a satisfactory improvement a remission of £4 was granted subject to, the ratepayer complying with certain conditions imposed by the committee. In a further case an amount of £25 13s Id was remitted in consideration of a cash settlement on ?.ale. The total arrears amount to £135 13s Id and there is very little equity for the vendor. In the two remaining cases irrecoverable rates were written off.
