NEW ZEALAND ORCHESTRA
DEPARTURE FOR AUCKLAND
The New Zealand State Orchestra, after four successful concerts in Wellington, two in Christehurch. and two in Dunedin. will leave for Auckland on Friday. During the Auckland season the orchestra will be conducted for one concert by Warwick Bralthwaiie, the New Zealander who has become a famous conductor in England. A representative of the Hutt News who attended all the concerts in Wellington found it intensely interesting to follow the development of the orchestra. Judging by the performance on Saturday night, when the Town Hall was again packed with a very enthusiastic audience, it has become a very line combination, doing brilliant work. The programme included Bach's Pantasia and Fugue in G minor (arranged by Andersen Tyrer), Dvorak's brilliant "New World" Symphony (including the beautiful and well-known Largo). Handel's "Water Music." and Tschaikoweky's tragic "Romeo and Juliet'" fantasia. Then there was SaintSaens.' Concerto in G minor, with Colin Horsley as solo pianist. for which the orchestra and the gifted young pianist received an ovation.
A gratifying feature of the concerts has been the large number of young people among the audiences.
