REMOVAL OF HARDSHIPS

GUILD ELECTS OFFICERS

At the annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Women's Citizen Guild the president. Mrs. E. Shearer, presided.

The secretary, Mrs. E. Denney, reporting on the activities of the year, said that although not all the Guild's aims had been accomplished many improvements had been made through suggestions to the City Council, the N.Z. Railway Road Bus Services, the Metropolitan Milk Board, etc.

A deputation to the Minister of Health, said Mrs. Denney, had resulted in his promise to do all in his power to facilitate the training of students and midwives in the latest methods in anaesthesia; that a school for obstetrical and gynaecological instruction was in course of construction in Auckland, and that finance will be available to procure the apparatus necessary to give painrelief in child-birth to all women who desire it.

Power for Water Heating

A discussion took place on the electric power crisis, stressing the hardships and inconvenience to housewives, and si letter was sent to the manage! of the Power Board suggesting that power for water heating be allowed at night. This would supply enough hot water for the average family during the day, instead of heating water in small quantities, thus using more power during the hours when commercial users were needing it. The suggestion was put forward as constructive criticism. Inspectors could still see that water heaters were switched off (Hiring the day.

Untidy High Street Attention was again drawn to the untidy condition of High Street on Sundsiy evenings, the pavements being littered with empty ice cream cartons, particularly in a certain locality, where a rubbish container supplied by the City Council remains empty, and steps are being taken to seek co-operation in the effort to instill si mesisure of civic pride in young people, observation having proved them to be the chief offenders. Election of Officers

The election of officers resulted: President. Mrs. E. Shearer (re-elect-ed); vice-president, Mrs. C. Moran (re-elected); secretary, Mrs. E. Denney (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs. Evans (re-elected); delegate to Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs. Hammington. Appreciation was expressed to the Editor of the Hutt News for publishing reports during the year.
