BIG CLOTHES DRIVE
LOWER HUTT AND PETONE
COLLECTION ON MAY 17
What promises to be the biggest clothes drive in Lower Hutt and Petone since the great UNRRA drive of nearly three years ago was ar-
ranged by a committee, representative of many Hutt. Valley organisations, which mel in the Lower Hutt Council Chamber. The meeting had
arisen out of the revelations made by CORSO of the urgent need in China for used clothing, medical supplies, etc.. as part of CORSO's undertaking in help restore China':! wrecked medical system.
The Mayo*- of Lower Hutt. .Mr. J. W. Andrews, was in the chair. The drive was fixed for Saturday. May 17, artd "the meeting organised arrangements for the work necessary.
Mr. C. W. Paeker-Doust, the Wellington provincial organiser, advised that Army trucks would be available to pick up the parcels of clothing and take them to the depots, and Mr. J. Vogel, Boy Scout Commissioner, and Mrs. P. H. Brown, Girl Guide Commissioner, agreed to supply Cirl Guides and Boy Scouts to act as collectors of the parcels from the houses. About 250 Guides and Scouts will be needed. It was stressed that, as far as possible, all parcels should be left at the front gates before 9 o'clock on the morning of the drive, so that the pieking-up would not be unduly delayed. After the drive the articles collected will have to be packed in cases, and it was decided to call a meeting of representatives of all the women's organisations in Lower Hutt to arrange for teams to attend at the depot during the following weeks, 10 sort and pack the garments, ready for shipment.
