WORK IN HITT VALLEY
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
The third annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Speech Therapy Association was held on Friday evening. Mr. .1. W. Lopdell presided. In moving the adoption of the annual report the chairman referred to the satisfactory work carried out by the acting principal. Miss P. Clarke, and her staff, and expressed pleasure at the presence of Miss Nancy Caughley, the therapeutist in charge or the clinic, who was able In attend after a severe illness. Later Miss Caughley spoke briefly on her experiences whilst visiting various countries during her Empire Bursary studies and promised to speak at greater length in the near future. She paid tribute to valuable work done by the secretary, Mr. A. M. Williams.
In speaking to the report, Mr. Williams pointed out that whilst the membership of 202 showed an Increase of eleven for the year it was a very poor response from such a large population in the Valley and he hoped that members would make an effort to increase the number during the coming year.
Value of Speech Trailing
Miss L. McPhee, who recently returned to New Zealand after serving', for 10 years on the staff of New Zealand House in London, said she, had attended the Unesco Conference' in Paris and that in working out a programme for educational rehabilitation in the devastated areas of Europe the conference had emphasised the importance of speech training and had planned to make a survey of the handicapped children in these areas. Their defects were the result of war and hunger and their remedy would be an important task of Unesco.
Mr. C. Stubley, of the Education Department, showed two educational films, one dealing with the woollen industry of England and the other dealing with the latest developments in English educational methods. The following officers were elected: —Patrons, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Andrews'; president, Mr. A. C. Richards; secretary, Mr, A. M. Williams; committee. Dr. Beryl Douglas, Mesdames Craw, Fitzmaurice, Mitchell. Innes, Clarke, Miss Ash forth, and members of the clinic staff, Messrs. N. T. Gillespie, V. A. Pool, and W. H. Smith.
It was decided to increase the annual subscription from 1/- to 2/6, us it was pointed out that the smaller subscription did not meet the «:ost of the telephone rental.
