WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

HITT VALLEY FEDERATION There was a very large gathering of members and visitors at Upper Hut.!, to the half-yearly Council meeting. The president, Mrs. R. Bennett, extended a warm welcome. Among' those present were Mrs. S. A. Barnicoat (Dominion President), Mrs. R. Kelso (of South Wellington Federation), Miss Maddever, and Miss A. Kane. The half-yearly report showed that now r the war is over members were able to give more attention to arts and crafts, drama and music. 9 There is also a marked increase in membership, and the president informed all that in November a flower show will be held within the Hutt Valley Horticultural Rose Show, also that in February next the Institutes are combining with the Pony Show at Upper Hutt in an arts and crafts section. Toys for Greece There was an outstanding display of approximately 25 0 toys for Greece made by members for an inter-insti-tute competition. First place went to Upper Hutt Institute for its collection of 7 5 toys, all beautifully made. Johnsonville was placed second. The judges were Mrs. S. A. Barnicoat and Mrs. Dr. Hopkirk. Several Institutes competed in a tableau competition, also for a trophy and “The Valley” received first place with “Corso” and Upper Hutt second with The judges were Mrs. R. Kelso and Miss Maddever.

Three long service badges were presented, the recipients being Mrs. White (Wallaceville Institute), Mrs. Jones (Upper Hutt Institute), and Mrs. Loveridge (Taita institute). Three delightful solos were sung by Mrs. R. Bradley, who was ably accompanied by her mother, Mrs. C. Whiteman.
