LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

TALK ON N.Z. SOLDIER Major-General Kippenberger was the guest speaker at the combined meeting of the Lower Hutt Branch of the Le'ague of Mothers, held in the Horticultural Hall last week, when over 400 members and friends were present. The subject of Major-General Kippenberger's talk was the New Zealand Soldier and in an informative and friendly manner he dealt with the qualities that go to the making of the average New Zealand soldier. Firstly, courage: It was, he said, one thing to be brave when you are with friends, and another when you are alone —one thing when you are well and lit, and another when you are weak and ill with dysentery, but the New Zealand soldier was noted for his courage. The New Zealand soldier responded to discipline. Self-respect was another essential quality. At Tripoli when the Division had been lighting for months existing on half a gallon of water per day for all purposes, a parade was put on for Mr. Churchill. The Division turned itself out perfectly. The New Zealand soldier was noted for his kindness and friendliness whilst abroad. When in Italy the Battalion frequently organised sports.for the children and at times shared their Red Cross parcels with them. * In concluding his talk the MajorGeneral paid a tribute to the fine qualities of the New Zealand soldier. Mr. A. J. Johnston voiced the appreciation ot the menfolk for the interesting address and Mrs. J. W. Andrews spoke on behalf of the women present. A most enjoyable musical programme was presented. Miss Sybil Phillips sang charmingly, responding with several encores. Mr. Fred Lynch delighted all with his baritone solos, and Mrs. Halligan gave much pleasure with elocutionary items. The League Choir, under the baton of Mrs. Barron, gave two brackets of three songs each which were greatly enjoyed. The serving of supper brought an enjoyable evening to a close. Toys for CORSO

Members of the League met at the home of the president, Mrs. Liebezeit, on Wednesday, and spent the day making Christmas toys which will be distributed overseas by CORSO.
