Liquor Near Dance Hall In the Magistrate's Court at Lower Hutt, before Mr. H. G. Thompson, S.M., Alex. Oliver Pratt, labourer, of Lower Hutt, was fined £3 for having liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall at Taita. Building Permits During September 27 building permits, totalling £51,846 (including a factory £38,000 and milk depots £1400), were issued by the Lower Hutt City Council, compared with 39 permits, totalling £14,243 in September last year. City Council Accounts Accounts paid amounting to £22,577/1/9 were approved and unpaid accounts ' amounting to £3040/12/8 were passed for payment at the last meeting of the Lower Hutt City Council. Junior Chamber of Commerce At June 10 ten Chambers were affiliated to the New Zealand Junior Chambers of Commerce. The total membership was 1931, an increase of about 400 for the year. Automobile Association Rooms Premises at the corner of High Street and Pretoria Street, Lower Hutt, have been taken over by the Automobile Association (Wellington) tor use as an office and lounge for members. Efforts for World Peace At the last meeting of the Hutt Valley branch of the Society for Closer Relations with Russia Dr. E. W. Merrington, Dominion president of the United Nations Association, explained the aims and objects of the Association and its efforts for world peace. New Street Names The by-laws committee recommended to the Lower Hutt City Council on Monday night that Alexander Street, Puttick Street and Montgomery Street, as shown in the subdivisional plan of the Maori block, be replaced by Atiawa Crescent, Puketapu Grove, Hamau Grove and Te Whiti Grove.

Communal Garages Provision for the siting of communal garages for tenants has been made in all State housing settlements. It is not the policy of the Government to encourage the erection of garages at present, but as soon as the building -position improves the work will be proceeded with. Rates Written Off The town clerk reported to the finance committee of the Lower Hutt City Council, at its last meeting, that the difference between the amount of current rates charged to the Shandon Golf Club and the rates previously paid to the Hutt County Council amounted to £52/19/2. The committee recommended to the City Council that this amount be written off, in compliance with the terms of the lease by the Shandon Golf Club.

Mr. Semple at Naenae. Two interesting films dealing with housing in New Zealand and plans for re-building in England were shown at the Naenae Community Hall last Wednesday night. After the screening the Minister of Works, Mr. R. Semple, outlined the Government's plan for the future of New Zealand. Mr. Semple was accorded a vote of thanks for his work on Ibehalf of public works and housing. 'A vote of confidence in the Govern'mont was also passed. m ■

Unlawful Conversion of Cars The unlawful conversion of cars has been so prevalent in Dunedin recently that the city traffic department, has organised a special coverage for the city area by means of which the whole city can be covered in a very short time by 67 or 70 motor drivers on the look-out for converted cars. "Tulip Sunday" Many Lower Hutt residents were among the thousands of people who visited the Botanical Gardens, Wellington, on "Tulip Sunday." The j weather was perfect, and the tulips were seen at their best. Especially beautiful were the golden bronze and deep crimson ones. Cherry blossom, magnolias, anemones and azaleas also made a gay showing. Street Political Addresses Mr. T. F. made application to the Lower Hutt City Council for permission to speak on the street, just off High Street in Eraser Street, on Wednesday and Friday evenings, from 7.30 p.m. until 9 p.m. or 9.30 p.m. until just prior to election day.
