The Hutt News Wednesday, October 16 1946. NEW INDUSTRIES

A very important question — whether new industries should he encouraged at present in the Hull ialley— was introduced at the last meeting of the executive, of the Hurt Valley Chamber of Commerce.' This is a matter that deserves earnest thought, and it is gratifying to find that the Chamber decided to postpone it for further consideration. It was pointed out that owing to shortage of labour, building sites. power, etc, present industries were handicapped, and several members expressed the view that until these shortages were overcome it was questionable whether new industries needing female and jirvenile labour should be encouraged. The annual report of the Nat, ional Service Department stated that acute labour shortage in the Wellington and : Lower Hutt districts was mainly due to lack of accommodation, and that any further expansion of industry in the Lower Hutt area should obviously follow and not precede a solution of present accommodation difficulties. "The Minister in Charge of Employment, commenting on the report, said there was a growing need for decentralisation of industry to secondary towns if a balance between productive capacity and labour resources was to be achieved. He asked employers contemplating any new activity to discuss with the National Employment Service the proposed location of' their business with regard to the availability of labour. It is hoped that as a result of present deliberations some method of solving the problem, will be evolved.
