SHORTAGE OF LABOUR
DITE TO LACK OF HOUSING
The annual report of the National Service Department states that the acute labour shortage in the Wellington and Lower Hutt districts is mainly due to lack of accommodation. In Lower Hutt notified vacancies for males exceed, on an average, the numbers of disengaged persons seeking employment by approximately 313 to 1. Until sufficient houses can be obtained, comparatively little inflow of labour from other areas can be expected. The report adds that any further expansion of industry in the Lower Hutt area should obviously follow and not precede a solution of present accommodation difficulties. It is expected that the provision of seasonal labour for freezing works in the Lower Hutt district this season will present a difficult problem.
