WELLINGTON IN 1842

ETCHING FOR PRESENTATION. A very interesting etching of Wellington and Port Nicholson in 1842 has been purchased by Mr. W. Tobraath, of Lower Hutt, for presentation to the Wellington Historical and Early Settlers' Association. The picture shows a Maori pa at Te Aro and another at Pipitea. The schooner Portenia and the barque Lady Nugent are seen in the harbour. There is very little settlement along the foot, of the hills, among the buildings being the public library and some of the original stores. Indicating the tremendous amount of reclamation work that has been carried out, Barrett's Hotel is seen on what was then Lambton Terrace, with (lie sea almost lapping the building.
