The new Youth Cqifncil formed in the Hutt Valley with the object of furthering' the religious, cultural and recreational activities of young people will doubtless receive the sympathy and support of the whole community, for everyone is agreed that the slackening of control in the home, • the, increased leisure, brought ' jj&fftit by shorter working hours, Wnd the- handling of high wages before a boy or girl has really learned the value of money, have created problems which are causing those who have the welfare of young people at heart much concern." With little restraint in the home, limited outlet for their vitality outside it, and much spare. time on their hands, it is easy for girls and boys to get a wrongsense of values and drift into a shiftless way of life. The question is how best to deal, with it. While everyone seems agreed ; that much of the fault lies with parents, many of whom are not taking the responsibilities of parenthood ' seriously enough, there is no doubt that the community has a responsibility to see | that opportunities are provided I the young people to spend their * leisure pleasantly and profitably. It comprises most of the youth organisations, members of which will be brought into closer touch with each other, to mutual advantage. With the backing of experienced business men and women the activities of the young people, will be guided into the • hest channels, and they will be encouraged, while enjoying all the amenities of their respective organisations, to fit themselves for the more serious duties of life. One important aspect of the Council's work* is the encouragement of attendance at church. .This should have far-reaching results. The Youth Council will doubtless get the support that it deserves.
