Unoccupied Houses

ACTION MAY BE TAKEN ! STATEMENT 13Y MIL NASH At the meeting o!' the Hu-. Valley Chamber of Commerce last week a member stated that it liad been reported that there were more vacant houses in New Zealand in 194 6 than in l ft:;6. He wanted to know if the houses had been completed or were in course of construction. Hon. R. Semple replied that the unoccupied houses were mainly large buildings. Some houses were partly completed and were held up for fittings. Some were held for sale purposes. Hon. W. Nash said that in 1935 there were 4.1 persons per house; to-day there were 3.7. In Peto'ne there were 17 fewer people than in 19;!:") but 150 more houses. If a house was empty for some time there was a lot to be said for legislation forcing it to he let; in view of the urgent demand for accommodation. In one city area 70 houses which could have been let were withheld. Despite personal rights to property this should not be allowed; there should be legislation to empower local bodies to take action to let the houses, ascertain the rent and pay it to the owner.
