SHOPPING FACILITIES
TAITA STATE HOUSING AREA At an informal meeting recently, thirty members of the new Taita State Housing area gave enthusiastic support to a proposal to iorm a Consumers’ Co-operative Society to provide the essential shopping, facilities ,n the district. The meeting was addressed by Mr. VV. L. Robinson, Wellington representative of the Co-operative Information Service, who outlined the principles of consumers' co-opera-tives and expplained how such a service could be operated in the local ,-Hute housing area. The advantages of the co-operative scheme were stressed by Mr. H. R. ijurlcin, president of the Epuni Consumers Co-operative Society. Mr. A. E. Howie, member of the committee of management of the Naenae Consumers’ Co-operative Society, gave details ’relative to the co-operative societies which have recently been formed in the adjoining State housing areas. Need of Co-operation. Mr. E. DufSn, chairman of the Northern Hutt Progressive Association, gave particulars of the work his Association had set. out to accomplish to assist in the' progress of the district, and stressed the need for co-operation by the residents in working for a community centre and a Medical Health Centre. After a period in which questions were answered and offers of assistance received it was unanimously decided that a Consumers’ Co-opera-tive Society should be formed and a pro texn committee was elected to make arrangements for a public meeting to be called for this purpose. Members of the committee were: Mr and Mrs Burtenshaw, Mrs. Noonan, Messrs. Whittington, McLagen, Berthold, Douche, Jebson, and R. H. Ellis (convenor.)
