TREE PLANTS
I KOTAUY CJbUB S CRIME | Following 011 a recenljf evening spent with Mr. Hampsor-Tindale, who conducted a most iiteresting talk and discussion "to mtobers of the Hutt Rotary Club seijice cemmittee, on the question of fsoil Conservation," a committee set up for the purpose of encou&ging tree planting in many of the vi|ley's vacant spaces. ! The first action takei by this committee was to approach Mr. Hutt the director of the Lower tiutt City Council's Reserves, who readily agreed to place his Knowledge at their disposal. On Wednesday last, aft<r the weekly luncheon, the first sttp was. taken when Mr. Hutt, as the guest of the Club, conducted some 30 mem bers to Mitchell Street, one (if the new areas of the Gdvt. Settlement, and planted pohutaKawa trees supplied by the City Council, i The first two trees, planted by the! president, Mr. C. H. G-riffin and Mr; J. A. Jacques, vice-president, were; of a distinctive variety known as Stryx, an especially beautiful and little known decidious flowering tree considered to be highly suitable for street planting purposes. This was followed by the planting of pohutakawas by the immediate past president, Mr. J. W. Andrews, and other Rotarians. ; It is hoped that the idea of treeplanting will be developed froni year to y£ar as a result of the Ilotary initiative and that other groups or clubs may be induced to take a similar interest with a view to beautifying some of the waste hillsides and so contribute something to assist soil conservation in the Hutt Valley.
