Hutt Valley Milk

COMMITTEE OP HNQUIRY TO SIT "People who don't' li/e in the Valley are not as competent to settle the question of this distriofs milk supply as are those who do live here," said Cr. W. Gregory when, at Monday night's meeting of the Lower Hutt City Council that body was discussing the letter received from the Minister of Health (Mr Nordmeyer) advising that "after a further review of the present circumstances, the Central Milk Council had decided to defer the implementation of their previous decision to set up a Hutt Valley Metropolitan Board until such time as the whole question of the organization of milk supplies had been carefully examined and reported on by a committee set up for that purpose." The personnel of the committee was as follows:—Mr. M. E. Lyons (chairman), Mr. H. E. Combs, M.P., both members of the Central Milk Council, and Mr. L. C. Nisbet, consulting accountant of Wellington. Points for consideration by this committee are: — 1. The 4«sire of the local bodies. 2. The terms of the present agreement between the Wellington City Council and tse Hutt Valley vendors for supplies of Wellington pasteurised milk. 3. The request by the combined producers and vendors organisation to equip Mangaroa.

4. Representations of the Hutt Valley Consumers' Society that the supply of Wellington pasteurized milk be jlaoei om a, permanent basis. - 5. The request of the W.D.F.A. for the i*clusio* of Wellington City within tk« s«op« of the 1944 Milk Act. Following a. suggestion by the Mayor that th« matter be deferred for consideration by a special committee of the Lowtr Hutt City Council, Cr. Gregory mii.\ "This matter has been • d»*«rr«4 «T«r aaul »r»r again and we have already had fiar too much of it in committee. It is a matter on which the people of the Valley should decide themselves, and I move that a poll of all the citizens be taken to se t e just what system they desire." Cr. Lonsdale thought that the matter should first be discussed at a special meeting of the Council. Cr. Horlor seconded this proposal provided the special meeting was open to the press. Mr. Andrews said that the trouble with the press being present at such meeting was that the Council's case would then be known before it was presented to the proper authority > i.e., the Milk Council. The Mayor thought the position could best be met by the letting up e£>.a special sub-committe« to exaine the po*ition and then report back to a special meeting of the Council. This course was finally agreed to and the Mayor, Crs. Dudding, Horlor and Lonsdale were appointed as the special sub committee.
