Victory Loan

1 INAUGURAL MEETING

For the purpose of launching the local effort on behalf of the 19 45 Victory Loan of £25,000,000, a meeting convened by the Mayor, was held in the Council Chamber on Tues day, Bth inst. There was a good and • representative attendance of business executives, local organisations including a number of women's associations. Among those present were Mr. W. R. Eggars, Chairman of the National War Loan Working Committee, and Mr. D. Molesworth, the Wellington organiser, both of whom spoke on the need for the present appeal to meet the cost ol' the war Mr. R. H. Nimmo, Chairman of the Wellington Committee, expressed pleasure at being present to speak to such a well attended meeting. He was convinced that the district was tackling the job in the right spirit and is all out to hit the target. Whilst he knew difficulties were going to be met and that the main one would be political, he pointed out that people must not lose sight of the fact that whatever Government was in power the loan would have to be raised, as our nation's safety and national honour are involved in the continuance of the Dominion's war effort. New Zealanders, said the speaker, have justifiably prided themselves in their unity of spirit and resolve in doing their part in waging the war. This record should not be spoiled by importing side issues into what amounts to a sacred task high above all sectional considerations. Last year the Wellington District just managed to raise its quota of £4,674,000 Lower Hutt's proportion of this was £230,000 and £134,000 was raised. This year Lower Hutt's objective has been lowered to £180,467.

Mr. Nimmo spoke of the para-

mount importance of personal contact and the organisation of subcommittees with the large industrial firms each working on a competitive basis with appropriate publicity. "In plain words," concluded Mr. Nimmo,

"we subscribe to War Loans for the privilege of living in peace and secur ity and no sacrifice we can possibly make is comparable with the sacrifice of the soldier who gives his life."

The local committee-' will be set up at a later date. Mr. Maurice Ralph is the local organiser.
