(By Gloves) Ron Hawes is training well for his first professional fight with Harold Foote, and from all accounts this will be one of the best bouts of the season as both boys are brilliant scrappers and will be tuned to the minute when they take the ring on Monday,' 19th July. An inter-house tournament is scheduled to take place at the Labour Hall, Petone. Teams from N.Z. Slippers Ltd, Standard Motor Bodies Ltd., Moera Stop Out, Petone Football Club, Hutt Football Club and others will compete for trophies; and this programme should produce some all in, all out, fighting. Fred Southee who lost to Roy Stevens at Auckland on Monday last was more than holding his own with his opponent up to the end of the fifth round when his legs gave out and, as he could not manoeuvre, Stevens set to work and, from, then on the fight was his. Stevens is an ex Otago amateur with a good record. He was Otago middleweight champion in '1940' and then joined the Army. In 1942 he won the South Island middleweight title and in twenty-two amateur fights he lost only one ap the Petone bqy was up against a hot proposition when he met the all-conquering Otago man and went down with flying colours in the most thrilling fight seen in Auckland in twenty years. Bob Hall, well known Wellington amateur is now resident in. Petone and will be taking - a had in the game. Bob has a few budding champions who will enter the ring in due course.
