Scouting

Hello, Everybody— Our work at jsormandale is going well and thirst Lower Hutt, L'puni and Arawa Troops have now cleareU their allotments of gorse. More work has been done to improve the tracks and a sLart will be made sooa 011 the Campxire Circle. Third Lower Hutt and St. James's Cub:-; held a combined outing on the; grounds recently and found we have some real jungle to play in. First Lower Hutt Scout Hall became "Ye Olde Barne" last Saturday night complete with the usual fauna and flora. The Rovers haven't been over the Orongorongas lately or they might even have had a pig in the sty. It was a very successful birthdayparty and dance: and well repaid the crew's efforts. J The St. James's Den \vas officially opened by Mr. J. WY Andrews (mayor) last Friday night and a large crowd of parents and friends were agreeably surprised .at the good work done by the Scouts and Scout ers in lining, painting and fitting up the place. t Scouter.3, - Ctlbmasters' and Patrol Leaders are invited to a picture evening at Wesley Hall, ]at 7.30 next Thursday night, by the Lower llutt Rangers. Old Wolves meet at Third Lower Hutt Scout Hall at N p.m 011 Thursday, 2i)th June, By the way, keep Tuesday, July 11th free for the Oh' Wolves Dance at ■ Eva Draper's Studio.

The training for Fireman Badge Will :be continued at . Lower • Hutt Fire Brigade Station next Thursday night at 7.15 p.m. A very important event in July will be the Saturday evening meetings for the Scouters' Basic Training Course. Every Commissioner is charged with the duty of seeing that Basic Training Courses, based, on notes authorised by Imperial Head quarters, are held -at regular intervals to refresh the v mem<Mries of the old hands and-4^ fch^|.h£ i .lxiewcbmers the fundamentals of their "Job. In this way the Scout, .Movement'endeavours to maintain high,/ standard of training and some uniformity of practice. In some Counties it has been the practice to grant Scouters provisional warrants until such time as they have been through the Ra Course. Wartime conditions have interferred a good deal with training.! activities in this County but |jre are now at a stage, with so niaffy' new Scouters in our ranks, that the Basic Course is a necessity, in order keep up our standard. It is preferable to have a Troop managed by its Court of Honour than by a Scouter who does not understand and is not trying to learn his job. Specialis ed training is needed in nearly, everv walk of life and in no place more so than in the Scout Movement where our future citizens are being trained for the service of mankind.
