Rugby Control

Determination to serve the interests of the game in spite of the prospect of financial loss was made quite clear in reference at last week's annual meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union to the work of those entrusted with keeping the game going in wartime. The large gathering of delegates, presided over by Sir Alexander Roberts (retiring president) expressed confidence in the managment by re-electing all members of the committee to office, the president having previously paid special tribute to the excellent service given by ths* committee.

In reviewing the past season's activities, Mr. J. N. Millard (chairman of the management committee) regarded the standard and style of play during the past two, seasons as comparing more than favourably with the type of play in pre-wai days. He referred to the part played by men of the services, and mentioned that the union had had actual experience of the Prime Minister's keenness to assist sport. The Petone Club was congratulated upon winning the Jubilee and National Mutual Life Cups and the Air Force upon winning the Hardham Cup. Mr Millard also paid tribute to the work of the various officials.

On the financial side, said Mr. Millard, the union had been fortunate in having a deficit of only £500. The Auckland and New Zealand Tank Brigade matches and the events staged by the Boxing Association and the United States marines had helped the finances materially. Another lean year was to be expected, and one commitment for the com ing season was the sending of a representative team to Auckland.

A proposal by the Hutt Club that the management committee be recommended to appoint three selectors, one of whom should be from the Hutt Valley, was not endorsed.
