OBITUARY

A. S. SCOTT

It is with deep regret we record the death of Mr. Andrew Sword Scott, which took place suddenly at his residence on 16th inst at the age of 62 years. Born at Balbegie, Perthshire, Andrew Scott came to New Zealand as a yqung man in the employ of the Union Bank of Australasia. In 1907 he joined . the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at

Wellington, and later served as branch manager at Hunterville, Te Aro, Reef ton, Petone and at; 'Martinborough from April 1925 until his retirement in October 1935 when he came to reside in Lower Hutt. '

Owing to indifferent health the late Mr Scott was obliged to lead a, more or less inactive public life, although he took a keen interest in the affairs of St. Stephen's Church and the Hutt Bpwling Club. As an executive member of the latter, he was probably the most highly , respected and valued member of the club, for it was to him his fellow members looked for help and advice on many occasions. He was al&o the club's sick visiting officer. The club will not readily forget the great service he rendered quite recently when he undertook the duties of both the secretary and treasurer during the time these officers were laid aside through illness. Amongst his many attainments! his gift of

writing poetry stamped him as a poet of no mean order. Iu this direction he will be very widely missed, not only among his bowling friends, but by many others whom he iiumortalised in verse. IJe wrote on topics both grave and gay and on c pensions under ' the nom-de-plume of "A.S." his poems have found their way into the columns of the presLs to ventilate topical subjects of a municipal nature.

The funeral service took place at his late residence, 5 Moa Street, on Thursday morning before proceeding to the Taita' Cemetery and was very largely attended, Bowling. Club friends acting as pall bearers. The service was conducted by Rev. L. V. Bibby, assisted by Rev. J. E. Lopdell who spoke of his personal friendship and admiration of the deceaseds

He is survived by his widow and two nephews in Lower Hutt—Messrs A. E. Spencer and C. Finucane, to whom is extended deepest sympathy; in their bereavement by a larg : e cip» cle of friends.
