River Board
and J. Mitchell
The monthly meeting of the Hutt River Board was held last Thursday afternoon, Dr. B. J. Dudley presided. Others present were: Messrs. G. S. Young, J. W. Andrews, F. S. Hewer
The board decided to recommend Mr. J. Cailiaon, chairman of the Manawatu-Oitoua River Board, as a representative on the Soil Conservation and River Control Council.
The engineer, Mr. H. Sladden, presented plans of the proposed new stop-bank to be erected near Mabey Road, and a groin across the old channel on the western side of the river, and was instructed to call tenders for the work.
Attention was drawn to an obstructipn which had been built on the south side of the culvert in Henau Street and was causing an obstruction to the free flow of water. The engineer was instructed to report on the matter.
It was reported that the creek cleaner met with a considerable amount of annoyance from certain ratepayers in regard to the disposal of refuse from the creek. The board expressed confidence in its employee, and was surprised that he did not receive the entire co-opera-tion of the residents.
The question of the board purchasing its own plant for improving the channels of the Waiwhetu and the Hutt River was discussed at some length. In the opinion of Mr. Hewer the board should have a more mobile plant for the removal of snags and debris from the river bed.
