HUTT VALLEY SWIMMING CLUB
YVitli the season's activities about to commence once again, the attention of all swimmers is drawn to the benefit that can be gained from joining an organised swimming club, and thus gaining knowledge and experience of this great sport. Unfortunately, too many "l>eople, children in particular, gain a beginner's knowledge of swimming and no more, when the road from there to real proficiency is comparatively easy. There should not be any need to stress the value of being quite a strong swimmer—too many lives have already been lost io New Zealand from drowning to need its further emphasis. That is in peace time, but war also calls on many to show their capacity for strong swimming. Let us just have one typical case. Plight-Lieut. P. Jameson, of Lower Hutt, was one of the three survivors from the ill-fated aircraft carrier "Glorious," which was sunk by enemy action, and he was called upon to fend tor himself in Icy cold water till the arrival of assistance. It might not be out of place to mention that "Mick" Jameson, now Wing Commander. D.F.C., with bar, was, prior to his entry into the R.A.F., a keen and valuable member of the Hutt Club, and gained a lot from competitions among his club mates. That is just one of I the examples that could be repeated a hundred times over.
That is why it is advisable to join the Swimming Club and take part in the competitions held in the Riddiford Batjis every week during the season. In particular inquiries, are invited from ladies for inclusion in a ladies' water ijolo team to be entered "in the Wellington Centre's competition. Please communicate with the secretary, Ward Street, Lower Hutt.
