Cage Bird Show

j <§> ! — The first annual show of the ' newly-formed Hutt Valley Cage ! Bird Society was held in the Hortil cultural Hall, and proved an out- ' standing success. Some 42'> exhibits i were benched, and the show manai | ger, < Mr. E. Monks, is to be congratulated on the arrangement ! of the staging and general lay-out. The Yorkshire canary judge, Mr. T. Parker, said the arrangement of the exhibits was the finest he had seen 'in New Zea'iand. He also commented very favourably on the standard : of Yorkshires shown, and said they ' had greatly improved since he had last judged a Wellington show, i Mr. G. R. Hutchinson, of Auckland, the budgerigar and finch , judge, commented <3n the quality and variety :of budgerigars and finches, and he considered th_e foreign and British bird sections exceptionally striking and interesting. The budgerigars, with their wonderful variety of colours, were a ' continued source of interest. In the British bird sections some rare and interesting specimens were exhibited by Mr. W. H. Richards, of Johnsonville, and Mr. C. Sowman, of I Lower Hutt. An interesting bird was a hybrid bred from a hybrid between a Japanese gold finch cock and an English green finch hen, with 1 a green finch hen. Other interesting exhibits in this class were an albino sparrow and a canary hen, yellow hammers, chaffinches, and an aviary bred thrush. In general, the British bird section was the best yet. seen, in Wellington. Some most interesting birds were to be seen in the foreign bird section, and included the following: — Strawberry finches from India,, zebra finches from Australia, Indian cut-throats, African tricoloured and black-headed nuns, Bengalese finches from Japan, including a rare crested variety, Indian and African silverbills, Java sparrows, blue and white, Indian spice finches, nutmeg finches, nonpariels and Gouldians from Australia, Australian longtailed grass (inches and diamond finches, painted finches, doublebars, Cordon blues from Africa, St. Helena waxbills from St. Helena, orange-cheeked waxbills, Cuban finches from Cuba, red crested cardinals from South America, Napoleon weavers from Africa, Peking nightingales from China, spreyo starlings, mealey rosellas, redrumps,, diamond doves and quail. The secretary, Mr. E. J. Jones, and his committee are to be congratulated on their efforts in mailing possible such an outstanding exhibition. The judges were as follows: — Canaries, Mr. T. Parker, of Hamilton; Tiudgerigars and Finches, Mr. G. R. Hutchinson, Auckland; Norwich Canaries, Mr. J. T. Brice, PalmersLon North; Roller Canaries, Mr. J. E. Cassidy, Wellington.
