Hutt Chamber of Commerce
—-<S> The annual meeting of the Lower Hutt Chamber of Commerce was held last Wednesday evening. Mr. W. Gregory presided. The annual' report recorded a year of activity and an increase in membership of 26. During the year the chamber had affiliated with the Associated Chambers of Commerce. Representations to the Borough Council had resulted in the abolition of the use of the area opposite the bridge as an amusement centre and the conversion of the plot into a car park. Another matter taken up with success had been a request to the council for better facilities for public conveniences. The chamber was also awaiting a reply from the council in regard to correcting inaccuracies in t.ne numbering of houses and a request that the council enforce the bylaw regarding the provision of numbers. Matters which had been investigated were schemes for giving suitable access from Waiwhetu to the centre of the town; the institution of bus services from outlying districts; the provision of car parking facilities in High Street, and an approach to the council to take practical measures to eliminate double-banking- on cycles. The following officers were elected': President, Mr. A. R. Brooker; vice-president, Mr. A. J. Gearing; executive, Messrs. W. C. Gregory, S. Harding, •W. H. Smith, N. N. Liebezeit, S. Carey, 0. Feist, W. Giltrap, L. Ferguson, C. Moran, P. S. Taylor, P. N. Player, J. Stevens, and T. J. Quayle. At the close of the business, Dr. B. J. Dudley gave a very interesting talk on his recent travels to Britain and the Continent, giving many graphic descriptions of the places visited.
