Y.M.C.A.

ANNUAL MEETING The fifth annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A. was held at the association's rooms last Thursday evening. (Mr. C. G. Hedge presided. The business of the meeting was preceded by a dinner, provided by the ladies' auxiliary, interspersed with musical items and community singing, conducted by the general secretary, Mr. C. L. Cato. The annual report, which was presented by the president and adopted, stated that the association had enjoyed a good year, and expressed appreciation of the work done by all who had assisted. During the year Mr. A. C. Edwards, the general secretary, had resigned to enable him to travel overseas to obtain further training in Y.M.C.A. work. The boys' work secretary, Mr. B. Dallinger, had transferred to Auckland Association to obtain further training. The board had expressed its appreciation and thanks to both tliese gentlemen for their' valued work with the Y.M.C.A. Mr. Hedge extended the best wishes of the board to Mr. C. L. Cato, who had transferred from Nelson to take up the position of general secretary and physical director of the Hutt, Valley branch. In the latter portion of the year the membership had been subdivided into small clubs, groups, classes and teams or leagues, in order that intimate fellowship may be developed. Plans are now in hand for the extension of Y.M.C.A. work in Waterloo, V.1.C., and Moera areas, and it is hoped to start activities shortly. Special thanks were tendered to the Ladies' Auxiliary, who, besides providing substantial cash contiibutions to the general funds, had purchased four tents for use at the annual camp. The ladies are now planing to completely renovate, the lounge and -rehabilitate the furniture. Forty boys attended the annual camp at Morison's Bush. A tribute was paid to the services of the camp mother and her assistants. An enjoyable mother and son evening was held towards the end of the season. The president expressed appreciation of the assistance received from the Hutt Valley Returned Soldiers' Association, which has an official representative on the board. This is very fitting, as the building was erected as a memorial to those who served during the Great War. Grateful appreciation was. expressed of the annual grant received from the McCarthy Trust, which greatly assists the work of the association. The financial statement showed a satisfactory state of the accounts. In speaking to the annual report, the president commented on the amount of work carried out by the youth of the Valley during the year, and expressed thanks to all those who had contributed labour, cash, or kind for the welfare of the association. He acknowledged the great assistance he had received from his wife, without which, lie stated, he could not have carried on. Musical honours were accorded the ladies' auxiliary, the president, Mrs. C. G. Hedge, responding. Mr. Hedge and the Rev. Thomson Macky were re-elected president and vice-president respectively; Messrs. J. B. Grey, T. Raine, A. Miller, W. J. Kennedy and J. Kerr were elected to the directorate, and Mesdanies Hedge and A. Miller as representatives of the ladies' auxiliary.
