■ A jumble sale in aid of the St. James's Boy Scouts will be held in the small hall on Friday, 9th June. Parcels ef clothing and other saleable articles may be left with the secretary, v Mrs. Barclay, 50 Laings Road. It is not often that one gets three plays in one evening, but this is to be the case on Wednesday, 31st May. Two comedies and a drama are to be presented in St. James's Hall at 8 p.m. It promises to be a very enjoyable evening. This is the first public function to be held in Lower Hutt in aid of the Wellington Cathedral Fund. The Hutt Debating Society held its weekly meeting, when Mr. McKillop presided over a very large attendance of members. Mr. Giddens gave a reading dealing with the psychological aftermath of the late war, which left much food for reflection. The debate: "That military conscription is necessary in New Zealand," resulted in a win for the negative. The helpful criticism by the judge, Mr. Scott, was a decided factor in a "live" evening. The main feature next week will be a number of set speeches, and the galaxy of talent offering ensures a worthwhile evening. Members of the recently-formed Mystery Cycle Club held an enjoyabel day at Maidstone Park last Sunday. These outings are becoming very popular and new members will be made welcome. An auction sale of the complete contents of a wen-furnished home will be held by Messrs. E. Johnston and Co. next Wednesday, 31st May. Among the furnishings and articles for sale are a fawn moquette threepiece chesterfield suite, tall-boys, dining room and bedroom furniture, office desk, an almost new Axminster carpet in fawn, hall runners, fireside chair, garden tools, lawn mower, good kitchen utensils, and appointments. The public are warned that split £1 Reserve Bank notes are in circulation in the district, one being passed over the counter of a High Street shop on Friday last. The work was very neatly done, and a piece of thin white tissue paper pasted on the back to give it the necessary substance.
