Memorial Unveiled

TO CAPTAIN WYBRANTS OLPHERT D.5.0., M.B.E.

At the conclusion of tho ceremony of officially opening the flower show on Wednesday afternoon the President, Mt. J. S. Barton, performed the ceremony of unveiling a clock placed on the wall, subscribed to by members of their late president Captain Wybrants Olphert. Mr. Barton referred to Captain Olphert's standing as a citizen of the Empire, specially honoured by His Majesty the King; a valuable citizen of New Zealand an honoured resident of Lower Hutt at the time of his death. Mr. Barton said that he considered the choice of a ■ clock as a memorial was a happy and appropriate one. It was a token of promptness, reliability and perpetual unobstrusive service. It was thus a fitting memorial to such a distinguished gentleman. In conclusion the speaker quoted the following lines from -Shakespeare: — "He only, in a general honest thought And common good to all, made one of us. His life was gentle; and the elements So mixed in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, This was a Man!" The clock bears the following inscription:—"ln memory of Captain AVybrants Olphert D.W.0., D.S.C., K.D., K.W.lt. President 14)35-37.''
