PLACING- THE MAT It is not generally recognised l),v bowlers that there is a right and wrong way of placing the mat on the bank after finishing the head. This was exemplified on Saturday in the pennants .match when Hutt played Melburn a:t LyaTl Bay. On the last head Hewer (Hutt) was six up on Gray (Kolburn). The Hutt numlbcr three, Little, jolm, drove and in doing so his bowl bounced at the ditch and struck the mat which was overhanging. Although the incident was only noticed .by a bystander, Gray claimed' a head head, which was awarded by the umpire in terms of rule 71 which states that if a ball strikes a foreign object it shall be dead.
