TOWNWOMEN'S GUILD.
The first monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt .branch was held on Thursday in the U.S.A. rooms, a large number o,f enthusiastic women being present. The meeting was opened with the singing of the Guild song, Mrs. C. E. Mo-ran, the president, then explained -the aims and objeets of the Guild for the benefit of intending' members. Miss Mary Graham, the speaker for the afternoon, gave an instructive and interesting address on "The Awakening of India's Women." Many present wore surprised to hear the extent to which the women of India weie now taking part in the social and political life 'of their country. After afternoon tea had 'been served Mrs. A. 13. W. Ross gave a practical talk and demonstration in the art of skin j^ove-inaking. ' Mrs. Gregor rendered two songs and Miss Inkcrsoll violin solos. Mrs. N. JLiebezeit was accompanist. An address 011 "Life on Norfolk Isilaud" by Mrs. Preddle, and a deinon--1 stration in the making of Ibutterfly wing pictures by Mrs. C. Young was announced for the September meeting. After the president had thanked them and posies were presented to the speakers and artists, 'the meeting was concluded with the singing of the Now Zealand Anthem.
