HUTT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL'S REPORT.

Reporting to the Board of Governors of tho Hutt Valley High School at Its meeting on Thursday evening, the principal, Mr. J. N. Millard stated that roll now stands at 373. Tho manual training rooms are rapilly taking shape. Acting on the Board's instruction Mr. Stoneheuse and ho !nd paid tho contractor his first progrefs payment of £-100. Now that the rooms are an accomplished fact there will b« no further necessity to send our agricultural students to the Pctwie Technical College. Part-time instructors will bi needed for both woodwork ar.il cookery classes, and I am adverting for these in the next Gazette. The grounds and gardens are looking well. The continual wet weather has given the earetaker a lot of trouble coping with the grass. The flood on the lower ground three weeks ago did no damage, in fact it should have doae good. The rock garden is beginning to show some bloom and the rose garden at present is a picture.

The work of the school is proceeding a* high pressure. After so many inteiruptions the pupils are malting a lau effort before the University Entrant examination. The secondary school inspectors have concluded a three diyj' visit. This, year's inspection is to grade the teachers and to consider the recommendations for Senior Free PI v: 3 pupils. The inspectors were very com piimeniary in their remarks about tho geography room. The film macliin? has been procured. Its cost is £25 and the films cost about (>/'- each for hire. Th ; geography club is paying off the cost at £1 a time. We have been fortunate enough to procure some films free, tie Australian Trade Commissioner has been very good in this respect. Diring the month very interesting lectures were given to the school by Mr. A. C Gifford ou Exploring thy Universe, nnl Mr. Payne, Assistant Australian Tnde Commissioner, on Australia,

The weather- has been very unkind to us during the month and we had gieat difficulty in getting a suitable fby for the athletic sports. When we dt 1 manage to held them they were ful irom every point ot' view. This year, for the ilrst time, the various championship trophies were presented, alter the sperts, There were no for four of the championships lu. these have all been supplied by d:-na tions since. The generous donors are Mrs. K. P. Hay, .Mrs. K. Orr. Mr. Rowland and the Old Pupils' Association The cups presented were very fine on".and the school feels greatly indebted to the people concerned. We have noiv a display of challenge cups that any school could be proud of.

At the Inter-College sports on November Kith, the school team did nn:ch Utter than anticipated and secure 1 third place behind Silverstream and Wellington College. Five separate championships were won by our boys and one of the boys was credited with record time in his sprint event.

The school concert proved a great sveccss both on thg financial Aide and from the point of view cf the | *r>lity ol ! the performances. A donatio,! of £30 from the profits has been < ? to the school hard court fund; i'li-; imv siands at £110. all collected 'In' a little over a year—a small grant has been given to the library, and the ro'"■nir.de: is to be used by Mr. Ramson for the purchase of second-hand books f n- next yea' 1 . The book fund should be able to return this money and it cri then be devoted to other school purposes.

will know that £<>85 over a period of ten year? (that is £68/10/- per year} is not a great amount for the upkeep of a band. Now that ii is not correct, as the protest committee ha.taken wit the following list from ilieir books which are Government audited yearly for the last lii years. Yroni I!V2- to IPol inclusive, the following amounts were received as subsidy from the council: fi'o, £*)(), £50, £30, £30, £10, £•_»."). Now during the period up tc IStJ.I the baud liacl paid over £f)00 plus interest for tho instruments and during that period received from the council £73 as subsidy, We accept the mayor's explanation regarding the refusal of the permit for the band to piny on liiddiford Park, and are in agreement that the mayor and the reserves committee did the correct thing. We would like to ask the mayor, now that the croquet club are allowed to play on the grounds, if we can expect to receive a permit to play in thy reserve as we have dene before, In conclusion we would like to thank the "Hutt News" for the space in which to state the true position.—We are etc., I'lJOTlisT <'(I.MMITTi;i;, .Lower Hutt .Municipal Band, per E. A. Longliurst.

WOBURN ROAD, Sir. .Residents of Woburn Head have suffered dust and pebble storms for months and the permanent way is begun. I want to point out that the •time and cost of laying sand, gravel, etc,, is increased enormously by the speed of trallic. If there is a traffic inspector he should inspect the trallie on this road, especially between 8 and 0 a.m and 5 and S p.m. The Vgnl speed is I believe L'o miles per hour and between school boards 15 miles per hour; the speed usually is liu to 50 miles per hour, sometimes more. Motor lorries, heavily laden with gravel etc., tear along at high speeds. No road will stand such hammering and there is also the question of life and' limb.—l am etc., , ; WOEBU'BN.
