On Sunday last a special service was conducted at fcst. James's Church by the Vicar, Rev H. E. K, Fry to commemorate the historic eveut. Preceded by the Lower Hutt Municipal Band a detachment of the 17th Battery, N.Z. Artillery under Major Gr. E. Cowie, paraded in the grounds and they were accompanied by the Legion of Frontiersmen and the Boy Scouts. The Mayor and Mayoress, accompanied by several councillors aud their wives, attended the service At the conclusion) of the service, Lieut. E. T. McKain standing at the headstone, sounded the "Alarm" the "Last Post" and the "Heveille," while the congregation iitood iu silence. The Vicar in his address, after a brief rcfcncc to the heroic defence by the 58th Kegiment on the morning ot' May 10th, 184:0, gave the Whit Suuday message. It is only as we believe in the Holy Spirit as the Power of God within us that we can understand the , true meaning of Christianity. It is the Spirit of Go I within us which alone can give us the strength and grace to J put into effect our highest aspirations and ideals. It was for the establish- j ment of the highest ideals that such J men had died. In their memory we should consecreate ourselves to the service of our fellows. Let no one think J that such a Commemorative Service was in any way a glorification of war. ' No man in his senses wanted war, cer- 1 tainly no Christian wanted war. Such ' men Lad given their all that we might 1 have peace to-day, and wjb should strive 1 by every means in our power to main- ' tain that peace. I
