EASIC SLAG FOR ROSES

Every rose-grower should know that he can grow the best roses in soil that is rather "heavy," instead of light and sandy. Such a soil may easily turn sour, and while it can give a good return when well-manured, heavy manuring sometimes sours it or sickens it. Better than the use of lime at intervals is basic slag. This is a lime-phosphate, which means that it contains much lime, and a varying amount of phosphate, one hoe will do the work much more efficiently and with far less labour 1 than a dirty rusted one. It is not always possibleto keep large implements like wheelbarrows and garden-rollers under cover, and when they are exposed the wooden handles split and decay. This can be prevented to a large extent by soaking them with linseed oil. Several applications' should be made until the handles arc thoroughly saturated. The oil fills up the pores and hardens, not only making a smooth surface If they are hung up the rubber goes out of shape and is more apt to In wet weather and when the soil is at all wet, tools should be cleaned and wiped dry after use, oil being applied to prevent rusting. All gardeners know how much easier it is to work with clean, sharp tools.
