I am aware that the wind on the heath is remarkably cold and bitter, unless one is provided with an overcoat, and it is not enough for me, when I am miserable. to gaze on a snowdrop to be filled with joy. I know that the feast of life is unequal, and while some are provided with a seat and are served with a dozen delightful courses, others can only hope to snatch a bone and gnaw it under the table. I admit all this. But do we make the best of our bo.uo ? I sometimes wonder liow many women really make the best of life. No, I am not, I assure you, one of those revolting people who assure theirbest friend when she has toothache, that pain does not exist; nor do I urge the penniless widow with six children to sing with joy as she goes about her work, nor invite the sick and unlucky to laugh for no reason thar that the wind on the heath is sweet! I do believe that one can, now and then, make things come right, and I have a sneaking feeling that only too often wc get what we expect! Not what we deserve, but what we are certain is coming— for good luck seldom comes to the person who goes to bed dreading what the morrow may bring forth. Of course, I quite admit one may go to bed fully expecting a fortune or a proposal to greet one next morn, and may not receive more than a reminder about Income Tax—yet ,all the same, the days when I have felt most hopeful have been invariably my really lucky ones!
