IS THE HUTT RIVER SAFE?
COUNCILLORS CONCERNED. At Monday's Council meeting, Cr. Ashton drew attention to the formation of a shingle bar at the mouth of the Hutt River which, he considered, endangered the safety of the district. Cr. Mitchell, who is also a member of the River Board, said that he had just received a report from the River Board engineer assuring him that everything was quite satisfactory. Cr. Napier supported Cr. Ashton's contention that conditions were not satisfactory. He had bathed at the estuary and found that he could walk across the shingle bank at the mouth of the river. He contended that the bed of the river was creeping up and that there was a danger of the river overflowing its banks. The Mayor said that the main trouble was that there was not enough shingle being taken out for building purposes. If the scheme of building subsidy was re-introduced as suggested, it would materially assist. Cr. Mitchell again assured the meeting that there was no cause for alarm. The stop-bank hand recently been raised at the lowest point. He knew no river in Now Zealand that does not have a shingle bank at its mouth. It was decided to ask the River Board to supply copies of the engineer's report to the councillors concerned.
