-4 The Lower Hutt Branch of the Red Gross Society acknowledge with thanks parcels from Mesdames Sadler, Davics, Walker, Miss Grimwood, Mr E. Thompson and several anonymous. , A most enjoyable evening was spent recently at the residence of Mrs A. B.' Cox, Wakefield Street, to celelbrate the J 80th birthday of Mr Henry Taylor Beck. Progressive euchre was greatly enjoyed, . the winners being Mrs P. Lowry and Mrs T. W. Beck. Mr T. Austin delighted tho company with accordeon selections. Mr. Beck, who is u very familiar figure in the Hutt was bom in Dumfrieshire in the parish of Applegath in the year 1854 and arrived in New Zealand in 1875. In days gone by lie was a prominent builder, St James's Church being one of the first buildings crected by him in the Hutt. A feature of the evening was a birthday cake fittingly decorated with 80 , candles. Tho guest of the evening made a most appropriate speech ending , with the remark "that this evening 1 was the biggest surprise of his life." Musiii and singing were then indulged in, the evening finally closing with the singing of "Tor He's a Jolly Good Fellow.'' A correspondent sends us the lat- ] est Scotch yarn: A Scotchman from Hawick on holiday visited Vesuvius. The guide remarked "You have noth- i ing in Scotland like that." With reference to the advertisement appearing in our issue of May 9th con-; cerniiig a blue overcoat taken from Waiwhetu School, it is stated by the owner that the coat was returned to j the school within an hour after school i closed. The taking of the coat was a , pure mistake and no reflection is cast I upon any person or upon the Waiwhetu { School. j

May 10th is the anniversary of the skirmish at Bouleott Farm, 18-18 during the Maori Wars, when Sergeant ligram, Bugler Allen and others to whom the memorial stone in St. James's Churchyard is dedicated, were mortally wounded. Some of the local Territorials are parading at the 11 a.m service next Sunday at St. James's Church. An attractive entcrtainmeut will be held in St. James's Hall on Thursday, 17th inst at 2 p.m on behalf of the Phmket Baby Contest, Children should not miss seeing this entertainment which will includo Charley the Clown with his Punch and Judy Show, ventriloquist and accrobtas. Also Miss Joyce Webster and Master Bruce Glennie in a humorous recitation and other items.
