WAIWETU PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION.
GENERAL MEETING
The President, Mr. Alex. Anderson:, presided over a good attendance of members at the general meeting of the Waiwetu Progressive Association held last A week. Congratulations were extended to the President on his election to the chairmanship of the Hutt Valley Power Board. Mr D. S. Patrick was also thanked for the valuable service he had rendered the district whilst a councillor and members expressed the wish that they might again have the pleasure of assisting his candidature for public office at the next elections. Regret at the passing of Mr. A. Mcßain was expressed and a vote of sympathy with his widow and family was passed. A letter from the General Manager of Railways was received stating that the Department could not agree to extend the l/6d section on the Waiwetu Bus Route beyond Waterloo Road as' requested by the Association. It was decided to further represent the matter to the Depart ment. Allegations were raised that the names of some ratepayers had been omitted from the Municipal Roll and also that at one booth votes by declaration could not be made as the supply of forms had been exhausted. It was decided, to collect further evidence in the matter with a view to placing the matter before the authorities concerned. The name of the Bell Road Reserve was discussed and as a result a suggestion is to be forwarded to Council -that it be re-named "Riverside Park," and also that an honorary caretaker of it be appointed. The need for better lighting of Hardy, Trafalgar and Brook streets was pointed out and the matter is to be taken up with Council to see whether additional lights might be obtained. It was decided to request that Council again approach the Government with a view to having Bell Road extended to connect with White's Line. The Committee was directed to arrange to circulate a petition in Graceneld asking that the Eastbourne Council erect a shelter shed at Graceneld for the use of bus passengers. Mr. Anderson in reply to enquiries stated that the Power Board hoped to be able to give a slight reduction in charges. He compared the Board's charges with those of other boards showing that outside the four centres the local rate wu the lowest.
