BALDWIN MEMORIAL ASSEMBLY HALL.

The committee set up at the general meeting held in the Council Chamibers on Oetot>er 3rd) 1929, to raise funds to supplement a donation made by the relatives of the late Henry Baldwin, for the purpose of erecting a Baldwin Memorial Assembly Hall at "Mie Hutt Valley High School, gives the following account of the progress of the Fund;

The committee decided to make the first effort immediately although <it was late in the year 1929.' They issued a ciixjular to parents of pupils at the school and, with the help of some who were not actually on the committee, smib sequently made a personal canvas of many of these. The Parents' Association also allocated a sum of £100 to the fund; the pupils of the school handod in £28/2/2, and the Old Pupils * Association £23/13/6. With the other sub scriptions these amounts brought the fund up to the splendid sum of £403/9/4 It is worth recording .that the very first week's wages of at least one Old. Pupils went to the fund.

It was the intention of t>ie Commit-* tee fit the beginning of the year to with the next part of their programme—the canvassing of those members of the. community who .were not actually connected in any way with the,.school; Owing to the financial stringency, however, it was decided to mark-time a little. Instead o£ matters improving they have steadily become ■worse, so that tie committee deems it iriadvisaJble to proceed with a' further campaign at present. It is realised also that an approach to the Government for the necessary subsidy would not now be opportune. ■_.. ' v The committee feels that the amount raised, along, with the amount so generously promised by the relatives'of Mr.. Baldwin, making in all £1400, will make a splendid starting point for the next campaign. The committee wishes to tender its •thanks to those w&o so generously set the. fund going at the first general meeting, to the subsequent subscribers,, and to the. canvassers, for their excellent efforts.
