Now that the longer 'evenings have arrived the Hutt Municipal Band will play in High Street on alternate Fri: day evenings, weather permitting.

When the fire brigade social was in

progress on Thursday evening, the brigade received a call from the neighbourhood of Pharazyn street which •happily proved not to be of a serious nature. The call made an intevestin'g rffceni oh the evening's programme as it amply demonstrated the Al efficiency of our volunteer fire fighters. At the first sound of the bell every man detailed for that evening 'a duty, sprang from his seat,, divesting himself of his clothing as he ran to the ongine, donned his helmet, and in trnro ,ininutes was gone, almost before the company round the tables had realised what it was all about, the engine was heard racing •down the street fully manned and prepared to meet the greatest emergency.

At the fire brigade social last week Mr. W. Nash spoke in high, appreciation of the service being rendered to the borough by the Mayor, Sir Alex. Roberts, although there was a great difference in their political views, he had always found him kindly, courteous and impartial and doing splendid work for the body politic. Replying Sir Alex said that he did not know why Mr Slash should say there was a difference in their political outlooks, as he defied Mr Nash or any one else to say what his political views really were; he hardly knew himself, but one thing was certain, he would never be a member of Parliament, as he could never be content to. follow the leadership of one individual on all questions. Continuing Sir Alex said that the problem that caused him most concern was that of unemployment. He wished, every morning of his life that he could have sufficient money to give 'everyone employment. He sincerely hoped that the reee.nt legislation would help to solve the difficulty. The Mayor said that he would like to take the opportunity of sincerely thanking fche people of the Lower Hutt for t>he wonderful help they had given him in his difficult task. :
