HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the .Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present: Mayor (Sir Alex Roberts), and Councillors A. J. Hobbs, A. Grierson, J. Mitchell, k\ Campbell,; A. E. Carver, D. S. Patrick, W. G. Meldrum, A. Mcßain, Dr. Boyd.

The New Zealand Alpine and Rock Garden Society wrote thanking the Council for the assistance rendered and forwarding a copy of the annual report and balance sheet. —Received.

Tlie'Hutt County Council wrote advising that a deputation lias been arranged to wait upon the Minister of Public Works andl Bailways with a view of ascertaining tlie Government's intention with regard to the projected railway on the eastern side of the Hutt Valley, and asking if the Council will be good enough to appoint a representative to join the deputation. On the motion, of Cr. Mitchell, the Mayor was appointed the Council's representative. , The Mayor'stated, that it was time the Government gave some idea of what was -intended in regard to the work. Proclamations had been in force for over two years and it was only fair to pro•perty owners that they should be informed whether the proclamations were to be taken up or removed. The.Mayor stated'that according to the minutes of the Fire Brigade it was found that Captain Slinn had completed his 25 years of sendee. The Council appreciated his strenuous-arid faithful sovice. He moved that the council entertain Captain vSlinn and his Brigade on Thursday, lGth October. Cr. Meldrum seconded' and it was heartily supported by all councillors. The Mayor explained that he had attended a conference of local bodies in regard to the proposed bridge at Plimmerton; The cost was estimated at £22,000 and the Government were prepared to spend £15,000. It was suggested that -Wellington * would contribute £4000 and the Lower Hutt £s©o. Cr. Campbell was in favour of making a grant as it would provide more public recreation grounds. Cr Meldrura favoured the council giving support. Cr Mcßain saiui the council had no right to go so far afield to make a gift of £500. The council had refused to make a grant for the petone ramp. It was decided not to take any further action until full particulars are placed before the council as to the action of other local bodies. WORKS, DRAINAGE AND HEALTH COMMITTEE The following report was presented:—Telephone, Call Box.—The Post and;. Telegraph Department wrote requesting permission to install a telephone call box in Railway Avenue opposite Marsden Street. Your committee has; to report having replied that it had no objections to offer to the proposal. Additional Water Supply. —Your committee has considered a suggestion by the Borough Engineer that permission should be given him to sink a 6in well somewhere on the eastern side of the Valley, in order that the possibility of obtaining an artesian flow in that locality might be tested. Your, committee is not, at this juncture, prepared! to recommend a definite site for the carrying out of this experiment, but has left the matter in the hands of the Borough Engineer and the chairman of the committee to investigate and report later.

Conveniences.-^—Your committee re grets to have to report that vandalism continues at the conveniences at the bridge. It will be remembered that owing to repeated damage to the locks they were removed from the doors and the latest damage is the attempted removal of the piping supplying water to the urinals. The damage has, of course, been reported to the police but the difficulties, of that Department in such a matter as this niust be recognised. Resignation of Assistant Sanitary Inspector.—Mr F. J. Rogerson, Assistant Sanitaiy Inspector^ has tendered his resignation having accepted an* appointment Vitti the Wellington Gity Council. PARKS AND BATHS COMMITTEE Thu following report was presented:—

Use of Recreation Ground. — (a) Your committee has to report having granted the Hutt Valley United Fire Brigades Association permission to hold its annual competitions on the Recreation Ground on Saturday, Gth December. This will not interfere with the use of the Ground for cricketers, except perhaps the use of one wicket, and it is not the desire of the Association to make any charge for admission, (b) The Hutt District Cricket Club has applied for the use of the Recreation Ground for the forthcoming season, and your Committee has to reconi mend that the application be granted on the same conditions as those obtaining last year, and at the rental set out in the next paragraph of this report.

Charges for the Use of Grounds.— As directed by Council your committee has reconsidered this matter and now has to recommend that the charges for the use of grounds, be as follows: —■ Rugby £75 p.a. last;year (£40); Hockey £35 p.a. last year (£25) ; Association Football £15 p.a. last year (£l2/10/-); Cricket £60 p.a. last year (£50); Croquet £65 p.a: last year (£55);

-. Shelter Trees.—Your committee has to report having donated 150 shelter trees to the Randwick School Committee from surplus nursery stock. Theft of Flowers.—-Your committee regrets to report that the theft of flowers from the Reserves is again prevalent, particularly in Riddiford Park, a bed of daffodils having been depleted of all its bloom in one night. Although these offences aie extremely hard to detect a vigilant watch is being maintained in'the hope'that the offenders may be brought to book. '. The Mayor stated it was very disheartr ening that such thefts should take place, and ill-became tlie residents of the Borough.
